Celebrating 200 Years of Ravenswood Mansion: A Piece of Brentwood History

It’s not every day that a community gets to celebrate two centuries of history. But this year, right here in Brentwood, we get to do just that. Ravenswood Mansion, a landmark that’s been part of our town’s story since 1825, is turning 200 — and the city is throwing a celebration that brings together past and present in the best way.

A Day to Celebrate

On Saturday, May 18, the city will host a free community event from 1 to 5 p.m. to mark the mansion’s 200th anniversary. It’s one of those events where there’s truly something for everyone — families, history lovers, music fans, and anyone who just enjoys a good afternoon in the park.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Live music and a DJ to keep the energy up all day
  • Food trucks serving up local eats
  • Inflatables, face painting, and balloon artists for the kids
  • A festive parade at 2 p.m. that will wind through the roads surrounding the mansion

This celebration is more than just a party — it’s a chance to connect with a place that’s been a part of Brentwood for generations.

A Look Back at Ravenswood

The story of Ravenswood Mansion begins in 1825, when James Hazart Willson II and his wife Emeline moved into what was then a new home, designed in Federal and Greek Revival style. The mansion stood as a centerpiece of the original Ravenswood Farm and witnessed nearly 200 years of change in the Brentwood area.

In 1961, the home was purchased by Reese and Marcella Vivrette Smith Jr., who maintained the property for decades before selling it to the city in 2010. That sale marked the beginning of something new: the creation of Smith Park, which today is Brentwood’s largest public park.

Smith Park Today

Many locals know Smith Park for its beautiful open spaces and natural trails, but it’s rooted deeply in the history of Ravenswood. The park covers 400 acres of what was once Ravenswood Farm and has grown into a vital part of our community.

Some highlights:

  • Over 6 miles of rugged hiking trails
  • A new mountain biking trail system that opened in 2024
  • The mansion itself is now a year-round event space, hosting everything from weddings to community dinners, all surrounded by its scenic, tree-filled grounds

Why This Matters

For longtime residents and newcomers alike, Ravenswood is more than just a historic home — it’s a symbol of Brentwood’s growth, heritage, and community spirit. This 200th anniversary celebration is a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come, while enjoying everything the park and mansion continue to offer.

So mark your calendar for May 18, and come be part of the story. Whether it’s your first time visiting or a place you’ve known for years, this is a moment worth celebrating together.
