Major Road Expansion Begins: East McEwen Drive Widening and Extension Project Now Underway in Franklin

After more than two decades of planning and anticipation, the long-awaited East McEwen Drive widening project has officially broken ground in Franklin, Tennessee. Local and state leaders gathered for a ceremonial kickoff on April 29, celebrating the launch of one of the city’s most ambitious infrastructure undertakings to date.

What’s Happening on East McEwen Drive?

A 1.3-mile stretch of East McEwen Drive is being widened from two lanes to four, starting at the roundabout near Cool Springs Boulevard and continuing past Oxford Glen Drive to Wilson Pike. This critical roadway upgrade is designed to ease traffic congestion and improve safety in one of Franklin’s fastest-growing corridors.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $45.8 million, with over $30 million funded through federal grants — a major win for the city. Construction is expected to span three years, with the road remaining open during the process.

Why This Project Matters

Local leaders like Alderman Bev Burger and Mayor Ken Moore emphasized the importance of this long-term investment. Burger, who has been advocating for the project since her first term in 2007, called it “the most ambitious road project our city has ever seen.” Mayor Moore echoed her sentiments, noting that the project has been a topic of discussion since the early days of his political career.

In 2005, only 1,300 vehicles per day used East McEwen. That number has ballooned to 13,000+ vehicles daily today — a clear sign that the infrastructure needs have outgrown the original design.

Engineering a Safer, Smoother Commute

According to Jonathan Marston, Assistant Director of Capital Improvements for Franklin, the terrain along East McEwen presents unique challenges. He described the curving road as “as close to a mountainous roadway as we’ll ever have in Franklin,” and asked the public for patience throughout the construction process.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the Greater Nashville Regional Council have played a vital role in helping secure funding and move the project forward.

🌟 What Comes Next? The McEwen Extension

In addition to the widening effort, Franklin’s Capital Investment Program also includes plans to extend East McEwen Drive from Wilson Pike to the Brentwood city limits, a stretch that will eventually connect to Pleasant Hill Road or Clovercroft Road.

The initial extension will be a two-lane road but graded for a future four-lane, median-divided street. This project includes:

  • Curb and gutter
  • A multi-use trail
  • Street lighting
  • Upgrades to three major Columbia Gulf natural gas pipelines

The City of Franklin and City of Brentwood are working together on this extension, with shared project costs and a joint commitment to improved regional connectivity.

Final Thoughts

The widening and extension of East McEwen Drive mark a major step forward in addressing Williamson County’s growing transportation needs. With thousands of new vehicles traveling through the area each day, the investment in this infrastructure will support long-term growth, reduce traffic bottlenecks, and improve the daily commute for residents and visitors alike.
